Inspired by saleable milk as the biological nutritional reference that provides compositional consistency to every calf

During the first few weeks of their lives, dairy calves are solely depending on calf milk replacer or milk as their source of energy. Milk and calf milk replacer contain mainly long-chain fatty acids. When the calf starts eating starter feed and roughage, rumen fermentation starts, resulting in the production of short chain fatty acids, which will then become the main source of energy for the calf.

In calves kept under natural conditions, this conversion is taking place over a period of 4 months, starting at an age of about 6 months. Dairy calves in commercial operations are forced into this conversion at a much younger age (8-12 weeks) and are allowed a much shorter period of time to complete this conversion. This potentially results in a weaning dip with reduced growth, increased stress levels, ultimately increasing the risk of health problems in the period immediately post weaning.

Energised calf starter feed contains long chain fatty acids that are delivered directly into the abomasum. They increase the total amount of starter intake, reduce the weaning dip and result in an additional gain in bodyweight of at least 10 kg, which in term results in a better health after weaning, an earlier age at insemination and a higher lifetime daily milk production.
